Xiao Zhen, daughter of veteran Taiwanese host Hu Gua, finally found out the reason behind her massive 20kg weight gain in six months, after a medical check-up earlier this month. The 29-year-old has been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder among women.
PCOS causes hormonal imbalance, irregular menstrual cycles, acne and obesity.
Following her separation from plastic surgeon Li Jinliang in 2012, Xiao Zhen has not made any appearance on TV, until she recently filmed an episode of beauty programme Lady First. During the recording, Wong Mei-Wah (better known as Bao Ma, Bowie Tsang’s mother) was especially concerned about Xiao Zhen’s bloatedness and prompted her to visit a doctor.
Despite regular exercise and food intake control with the advice from a dietitian, Xiao Zhen was unable to shed the extra pounds, signalling a health problem. The mother of one was also perplexed by the medical report, which stated that she has a high blood sugar level, as she is not a fan of desserts and carbohydrate-laden food.
While speaking to reporters, the 174-centimetre tall host, who currently weighs 80kg, said that her six-year-old daughter, Emma, has been a darling to her. “Even though I’ve grown fat, she still compliments me about my figure so that I wouldn’t be upset,” said Xiao Zhen.
To control her condition, Xiao Zhen is taking birth control pills, and consuming 2500 cc to 3000 cc of water every day to boost metabolism and to improve her bowel movements.
