Dennis Chew replaces Irene Ang in Ah Boys to Men: The Musical

Popular Love 97.2FM DJ Dennis Chew will take over the role of Mrs. Chow, recruit Ken Chow’s mother, from Irene Ang in the upcoming Ah Boys to Men musical.

The casting change comes as a result of Irene wanting to focus more attention on her duty as Executive Producer of the show. She previously played Mrs. Chow in the two Jack Neo films that inspired the production.

“Juggling between being the CEO of FLY Entertainment and managing my group of subsidiaries, I think it would be unfair to the musical if I am unable to give hundred percent of my time and effort to this production,” the multi-hyphenate stated in a press release. “Ticket sales response has been very positive and corporate bookings are also very well received. I hope that the media and fans will also extend the same support and affection they have for me, to [Dennis] as well.”

Irene personally shortlisted Dennis for the role because he is “a good actor” and “better singer”. She also believes that he will be able to bring a refreshing edition of Mrs. Chow.

“From a young age, musicals have been a big part of my life,” enthused Dennis. “Ah Boys to Men the movies have made groundbreaking success in Singapore’s box office, and I’m really excited to play a major part in the musical.”

This won’t be the first time he takes on a female role – Dennis is also famed for his hilarious portrayal of Aunty Lucy, a bespectacled, curly-haired character who was conceived for Ch8’s 2009 variety show Paris and Milan; as well as Mrs Png, also the mother of a recruit, in play Army Daze.
