After giving birth to her daughter Debbie Wong in October 2012, Hong Kong actress Athena Chu withdrew from the limelight to look after the baby girl. Although she initially planned to let her Debbie enjoy her childhood by getting close to nature and animals, she recently changed her mind about the “freedom education” method.
Unlike other parents who would sign up for nursery classes when their kids turn two, Athena did not actively look for schools and instead, made her daughter listen to children songs and read picture books.
Following her husband Paul Wong’s “patricide declaration” last year, Athena’s good friend, actress Ada Choi has been persuading the couple to send Debbie to school so that she would not lose out to other kids.
Ada also highly recommended St. Catherine’s International Kindergarten, where her elder daughter Zoe Zhang is studying at. Even though Athena missed the admission exercise at the beginning of the year, she has reportedly scored a rare interview opportunity via Ada’s connections.
Sources claimed that Athena has specially hired a foreign teacher to give English lessons to Debbie, in preparation for the interview. “She even told Paul to watch his words [during the interview] so that he wouldn’t ruin their daughter’s chances [of getting accepted into the school],” an insider said.
